Who It Is: Breath of an Epoch – perennial; Ef! Gurlz Records (2014)
What It Sounds Like: emo/jazz, George Costanza, Mylets
Breath of an Epoch describe themselves as “angsty kids who yell at things.” It’s a pretty common description for emo bands these days. Yet they don’t play typical emo. These three “kids” mix emo, math rock, and jazz. On paper, this almost doesn’t look like it would function. Math rock is precise and technical. Emo isn’t supposed to sound crisp or well produced. Jazz can be played as sloppily as you want or as precise as possible. Breath of an Epoch mixes sloppy jazz with the lyrics of emo music, while throwing in the technical stylings of math rock, and makes it work.
These dudes rule, and they’re featured on the Man the Capstan… CSD compilation.
Just a heads up to all those that ordered a copy before Saturday. They’re all packed up, but I missed the PO.
